Self-Defense is Self-Care

Self-defense is self-care. Oxford Dictionary defines self-care as “the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one's own health” or “the practice of taking an active role in protecting one's own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress”.

Most people, when considering self-care, automatically think of eating a balanced diet or committing to a fitness regimen. Self-care may also involve taking regular vacations, meditation, or getting enough sleep. Ultimately, each of these activities serves both a present and future purpose. In the moment, self-care helps to establish a physical and mental equilibrium. From a preventative perspective, these activities forestall the onset of illness, disease, or distress.

So why is it so difficult for people to realize the importance of self-defense? It is the ultimate form of self-care. Self-defense saves lives. It protects one’s well-being, and it prepares individuals to manage stress. Like any other act of self-defense, it requires investment, discipline, and commitment. And the person seeking to improve must understand that he or she is worth both the sacrifice and the positive results.

The bottom line is this…

If you love and value your life, you will handle it with care. Drink your water. Eat clean. Mind your fitness. Rest. Take your vitamins. And learn to defend yourself. You are worth it!
